Ethereum 2.0 will Launch Altona Test Network Next Week
A new Ethereum 2.0 test network called Altona will be launched on Monday, June 29th. This decision was made at an online conference of Ethereum developers on June 25th.
Developer Afri Shadon, who coordinated previous testnet launches, announced the achievement of the minimum number of deposits needed to launch Altona.
Altona is a “devnet”
Altona will be implementing the updated Ethereum 2.0 specification for the first time. According to the developers, it could be the first public Ethereum 2.0 test network. However, they still call it “devnet” (network for developers), as it is primarily focused on eliminating critical errors. Serious problems with synchronization have been found in the previous testnet.
However, the Ethereum 2.0 team hopes that the new specification will be stable enough to eventually become a full-fledged public test network (such as Goerli and Rinkeby, Ethereum 1.0 testnet).
The timing of the launch of the zero phases of the main network of Ethereum 2.0 is still unknown.
